WBR 184z: "Diana Victorieuse", cast from the model by Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse (1824-1887), last quarter 19th century. Signed Carrier-Belleuse and with the Exposition Universelle 1889 stamp, on the original revolviong rouge griotte marble socle with bronze cartouche inscribed "Dianna Victoreuse, Carrier-Belleuse". The artist considered this to be his finnest work, the great goddess of the hunt standing on a wild boar. One arrow detached and bow loose. Note: As his last work, he completed the plaster for the 1885 Salon, included the marble in the 1887 Salon and the bronze was first shown in 1888. $12,000

A richly carved elm & ash Buffet a Deux Corps form Caux in Normandy (Cauchois), c.1830. The pronounced crown molding starts and stops with fluting, creating a dentil molding effect and the corners are carved in a drapery motif. The whole is lushly and deeply carved with flowers and foliage on the apron, doors and crest rail and used to particularly good effect along the central uprights - carrying the eye upwards. The feet have been tipped. The upper doors enclose shaped shelves, one with 2 attached drawers.

A rare, important & historic Chinese export rosewood Bureau Bookcase in the manner of Thomas Chippendale, c.1835. The astragal glazed doors enclose adjustable shelves (now glass). The slant-front encloses a well fitted interior. Raised on elegantly formed ogee bracket feet, the case of drawers & dividers boldly blocked in 9 sections. Fine brasses including carrying handles. Note the arches of the pigeon holes - pure Chinese taste. The 9 panel blocking repeats on the drawers. This splendid piece belonged to the late Sir John Barbirolli and Lady Barbirolli (the American oboist Evelyn Rothwell). Sir John was one of England's greatest conductors, as well as conductor of the NY Philharmonic, Houston Symphony, etc. Included are Lady Barbarolli's various gas ration booklet, Decorative Arts Society membership card & several bank cards.

Solid burl panels in the door. Carved roundels begin at the deeply scalloped apron panel & move up the face becoming a trio of flowers at the top of the door. The basket of flowers also repeats in inlays from base to crown.

The light inlays are contrasted on the upper legs with darker ovals & ovolo panels reflecting the line inlaid legs. Replaced pulls & a few minor repairs comensurate with age & use. Secondary woods are oak & deal. Central drawer above an arched opening replicating the form of the piece, flanked by a deep drawer presented as 2 drawers matching the drawer & cabinet on the left side.
