Wp-1907z: "Rue de la Paix, Place Vendome" Edouard Cortes:
Catalog Home "Rue de la Paix, Place Vendome," oil on canvas, c.1950, Edouard Cortes, France, 1882-1969. Born into a family of artists, Cortes lived in Lagny and Paris over the course of his life. It is his depictions of Paris that are most collected, but his abilities and interests were wide ranging. Paris, both a WWI war hero and a pacifist, his view of Paris evoke time before the horrors of WWII that swept away a world he loved. A leading West Coast gallery owner and friend, David Klein, shows in his book: "Edouard Cortes, Le Poete Parisien de la Peinture" the nearly identical scenes on pg. 140 (not unusual as the artist constantly revisited both physically and in his art the scenes of Paris which most enchanted him). Day, night, seasons changing, snow, rain, daylight effects- the dance of time on immutable Paris fascinated Cortes. Original frame. Shipping label of the period on frame is dated July 31, 1953. Of note, a pin hole near the left base of the monument. Cortes, a modest man, was outraged by the blatant forgeries of his work and signature. He took to making a tiny, concealed pin prick which allowed him to authenticate his work from his records of these tiny holes. $55,000
