A bold North Carolina Chest of Drawers in the Restauration Style, c.1835-45. Of solid cherry and walnut with yellow pine secondary, the chest brilliantly juxtaposes a diminutive size with an exaggerated set of contrasts: angles to curves, light to dark, herringbone solid wood effect from drawers to drawer and on each colomn. Even the galery repeats the angles that began on the scrolled feet. Replaced pulls and right back splash. Only a gifted craftsman could see such amazing possibilities in a cheery tree! 51"h., 36"w., 22"d. $1,800

A superb Italian bombe marquetry commode, probably Milan, c.1800 with later interior repairs. The dramatic shape exemplifies Italian rococo, as does the contrasting square block parquetry spectacularly enhanced by star inlays on the sides and as dramatic escutcheons. Walnut & walnut veneers. Awesome shell fossil marble top, the underside showing skilled inlaid steel rod repairs for stabilizing old cracks. One rear leg repair. Minor veneer repairs.
